I use notebooks when I need room to explore creative ideas. When working on one art commission, I was intrigued by the idea of distilling the essence of human shapes into their simplest form possible.
What makes a squiggle recognizable as a human shape? Philosophically, what makes a human recognizably human? And then, another question: what are the simplest forms of humanity?
Maybe it isn’t always about our shapes that makes us human. It could also be about the values we share, the virtues we gladly recognize in each other.
A few of these came to mind fairly quickly: beauty, respect, humour, trust, meaning, kindness, patience, purpose.
