watercolour gouache + iridescent silver on paper

This painting was an experiment. I was in Banff on a work trip and had a few hours to explore the medium of watercolour gouache.

It was stormy outside that day and not conducive to walking (which I did anyway but got soaked to the skin). Later in the afternoon, after drying off, I looked out the window to the trees and saw this vision of water gleaming on the branches and the road shimmering with precipitation.

I sketched this landscape out rather quickly, enjoying this new medium. It was a small painting, somewhat “Dr. Seuss” in it’s rendering.

A week later, back in Vancouver, I added the iridescent paint to highlight the beauty of the water and the trees. I love how the landscape glows and how the movement of the brush indicates the changing sky.
