Nomadic Madonna is a term I thought of when I saw the look on this woman’s face. There is gentleness and wisdom and a “knowing” that she seems to possess. She is present but self-contained, contemplative and seemingly wise. The “nomadic” theme speaks to the fact that while gaining knowledge is easy, gaining wisdom requires the pairing of knowledge with action and intention. There must be movement.

This painting is also one in a series of collages I’ve done with paper towel waste, tearing the sections into strips to make something new. I have enough waste to make many more of these transformed creations, which is a literal and metaphorical statement for my life and work, I imagine.
