This painting was commissioned for a milestone birthday. The person’s current adage is “vulnerability is the new punk”. Which made a lot of sense, considering he is in a punk band and has lived through some interesting experiences. If you look at the painting upside-down, you can just barely make out the slogan.

I didn’t want to make anything too concrete in this painting since I knew the purchaser preferred abstract forms but I wanted to celebrate his love of the outdoors, his tour van and bandmates, and the new learnings he was embracing.

I agonized over the techniques in this painting, wanting to get it just right. In the end, I probably overworked it a bit. But it was work done in appreciation for all who this purchaser is, so I have made my peace with it. If there is ever a time to celebrate people, I will be all in. A painting is one way to do that.
