This painting has beautiful colour and texture but speaks to darker themes. I painted it in honour of all the women who have experienced violence.

Imagine a scenario where the protectors are the abusers. For many women (maybe as many as a third or maybe even half of our population), this is the case. This painting is part of how I am protesting these atrocities.

A description from top to bottom of the painting:
There are webs and traps between the buildings (how abused women fall between the cracks), then there is a layer of valiant men outlined in black, the stalwart defenders of what is right but, ironically, sometimes the very ones who are abusive.

In the middle of the painting are women outlined in white, a crowd of witnesses representing the murdered and missing in our society. Near the bottom of the painting are the “eggs”, the unborn potential of what could be and the future of all women and girls. Finally, all the very bottom are the rivers of beauty that hallmark women.

Although the themes are difficult to visualize, I wanted to hold out the hope that seeing is knowing and knowing is doing differently. We can all protest and influence for the good of social change. This is a small work toward that goal.
